Vivienne,
I am interested in your "Webside care" and other modules you are offering your students. Is there any way we could set aside more time to discuss this?

These are great suggestions, Judith. I really enjoy using Kahoot! In fact, I even use it with my graduate students to review important terms related to project management. Since most of my online teaching experience has been with graduate students and through asynchronous communication, I'm slowly learning how to do these activities with my undergraduate class via Zoom. As they say, "growth mindset." Thanks for sharing! ~ Marti

Hi Marti,
Some of the things I have tried include using humor, personalizing the learning exchange, using polls, assigning peer-reviews, assigning pre-lecture work and having the answers discussed in class while setting up small stakes prizes for actively participating in a friendly classroom competition, inviting guest-speakers, and using breakout rooms:
• In terms of humor, I find that it promotes connection to the students. In my experience, it increases student engagement and contributes to students’ improved recall. I believe humor conveys an unspoken message, one that says that the instructor cares about student comprehension, and that their satisfaction with the learning experience is important, thus helping combat apathy or lack of engagement. It also sets a tone of a relaxed learning atmosphere that is more conducive to learning.
• In terms of using polls, I used the built-in polls feature in Zoom, both to check for understanding on a given topic, and also for students to provide each other feedback after their classmates’ presentations. I also asked follow-up questions on the feedback they provided by asking a specific student, so they had to “explain” their feedback. That definitely helped in them paying attention to their classmates’ presentations, knowing that they would have to participate in the poll for feedback, and that they could be asked to elaborate on the feedback they provided.
• I also used Kahoot in order to personalize the learning exchange, by creating questions for which the answers were the students in our class (e.g., who plays Lacrosse and has 2 sisters?”, “who played the lead in their High School production of Cats?”). This was important because one of the Learning Objectives of my course is promoting a sense of community among students, so this was an activity that promoted that learning objective.
• Assigning peer-reviews (rather than grading them myself) and also assigning pre-lecture work and having the answers discussed in class while setting up small stakes prizes for actively participating in a friendly classroom competition,
• The guest-speakers I invited talked about topics that students had requested, so that helped engage them too.
• And using breakout rooms also helps keep each of them engaged because it allows them to work together towards a common goal or project (PBL) and also allows to assign roles to each of the group members and then present their group project through Zoom screen sharing.
I hope this helps :)

Vivienne,

Wow, what a great opportunity and an innovative way to keep doing your work. The "webside" care is going to be even more important. As you mention, telemedicine is out of the box and will continue after the pandemic. It will be critical for allied health professionals to develop these competencies related to this new delivery model. How wonderful, too, that this is brining together the opportunity for interprofessional collaboration! Thanks for sharing.

Hello Everyone,

I am coaching allied health faculty on the development of simulated learning modules; this is a complement to the experiential learning toolkit I developed to support their work in light of COVID-19. These modules (which are being created for students) are intended to focus on specific clinical skill development, cultural competence, and best practices in “webside care.”

Some licensed professions are being more flexible in allowing these types of experiences to count toward a portion of the hours of clinical experience needed to be eligible to sit for the licensing exam. COVID-19 has also created an opportunity for interprofessional collaboration; many health programs that previously kept their clinical training completely separate are now working together to codesign these modules. This is not only efficient as a business practice, but replicates the kind of interprofessional care most patients will experience in the future. I’m also excited for the expansion of simulated learning modules to our teacher education and education administration programs.

Best,
Vivienne Felix

Hello all,

Given the drastic changes that have occurred across the globe due to COVID-19, how has it affected what you do as an experiential educator? I am currently teaching an experiential education-designated course called Design Thinking. I've had to move the course fully online. We have weekly Zoom meetings and students still plan to present their projects (but via Zoom). I had a guest presenter last night and we did our best to engage the students through polls and Socratic questions.

I realize that others here are working in study abroad, internships, community engagement, research, etc. What have been your experiences in changing the way you do things?
