Pre-Conference Workshops
Space is Limited – Register Early!

A key component of SEE’s mission is to enhance the professional development of its members.  Another component of the mission is to be the national leader in advancing experiential education as a field and a profession.  To accomplish both aspects of this mission, SEE created the Experiential Education Academy, often referred to as the EEA or the Academy.

The EEA supports and contributes to both the day-to-day work effectiveness and the long-term development of SEE members through a series of professional workshops leading to a Certificate of Knowledge.  The program is designed for all practitioners, regardless of specific experiential application.  The set of workshops creates a common base of knowledge and competence for the field of experiential education and allows participants the flexibility to increase their expertise in their own particular interest areas.

Pre-conference workshops offer the unique opportunity to focus intensively on Experiential Education topics and issues.

SEE will offer four EEA Foundation courses along with two elective workshops in Orlando this year. Click here for more information regarding the Experiential Education Academy (EEA).

Due to space allocations at the conference, workshops are limited in size.  Registration for all workshops will close when maximum participation is reached.

  1. Fundamentals of Experiential Education - Participants in this workshop will explore the theoretical and philosophical roots of experiential education and the principles of good practice fundamental to all types of experiential learning.  Participants will have an opportunity to actively explore the implications and applications of this information, and to identify the resources available for continued professional development and specific use in their programs.
  2. Legal Issues - This workshop examines legal issues such as liability, risk management, and protecting and accommodating students’ rights that arise in administering experiential education programs, with particular emphasis on the reciprocal rights and responsibilities of the school, community partners, and student. The primary objectives of this workshop are to increase faculty and staff awareness of the legal responsibility to their students and to bring greater awareness of specific laws and regulations that impact their respective areas of responsibility.
  3. Community-based Learning (NEW) – Community-based learning is broadly defined as learning that occurs in partnership between a learner, learning leader, and a community organization that results in reciprocal benefits. In this workshop, participants will get to engage with multiple approaches to integrating experiential learning principles into community-based learning practices. Participants will work through strategies to embed community-based work in courses and programs as well as apply community-based learning experiences to their own contexts.

Track Two:           Monday, September 25, 2023                12:15PM – 3:45PM
An additional fee and registration is required to enroll on the pre-conference workshops.

  1. Principles of Ethical & Best Practices - Workshop participants will examine two SEE foundation documents, the Guiding Principles of Ethical Practice and Principles of Best Practice in Experiential Education. The goal is to develop a deep understanding of these principles through both a theoretical examination of the contents and a hands-on experiential component where participants will be given an opportunity to generate ideas specific to their own programs.
  2. Assessment - This workshop will introduce beginners to the fundamentals of assessment in experiential learning settings and provide intermediate level assessment training for practitioners beyond the beginner’s level, who seek to improve their outcomes assessment skills.  The primary goal is to assist participants in the development of an outcomes assessment plan to use at their own institution.  Employing a hands-on, active learning approach, this workshop will include a mix of presentation, applied tasks, small group work, and interactive discussion.
  3. Strengthening EE at Your InstitutionSEE has pioneered the area of strategic planning related to the process of institutionalizing the full range of experiential education into educational and community institutions.  This workshop addresses seven critical factors that need initial and ongoing attention: mission and values; curricular integration; faculty involvement; quality assurance and assessment; administrative infrastructure; budget integration; and strategies for change.  Participants will examine alternative strategies and collaborate with one another in identifying appropriate approaches for their respective institutions/organizations
