Hi Rebekah,

I love that you are looking at ways to create undergraduate research experiences for your online students. At Valencia, we have been doing this for the last 18 months! We've come up with some really cool projects and ways to get students the experience they need to engage in research. Our program is rapidly growing at the college and has been really successful, despite the move to being virtual. In fact, a colleague and I just published a paper on what we have done to make these changes and how we've been more equitable in our approach. I'd be happy to share some of our initiatives with you. Please feel free to email me directly, [email protected]

I did some last year at Stony Brook University with startup, non-profit and company. Doing it online is actually great because we are no longer limited by where these collaborators are (but of course with consideration of any time difference).
I set up an initial meeting, explained the goal of what we are trying to achieve and what the criteria (and limit) are in terms of what our students can do, and then set up follow up meetings and feedback form to get input from the collaborators.
It's important to establish how students are students, and they are not doing things full time yet. So, establishing an understanding of the limitations really helps.

Also, the other thing is whether your institution wants to do this for individual students or with a group of students. The amount of work on the admin side could change dramatically.

Our institution is enhancing our online programs and want to ensure to include experiential learning like we have for our traditional programs. My colleague and I are focusing now on how to revamp/structure it for our online programs. I would be happy to connect with any colleagues who offer research projects for online students. Our traditional programs have students complete two applied research projects and our online programs will have the same offering/requirement. I would be interested to just gain some insight from some fellow experiential educators who have experience in online experiential education and online research projects.
