This topic seems to be a moving target. Really, it depends on the state and institution. Many schools tend to steer clear of the idea that their students are working at such a facility because it conflicts with institutional values and mission. Others are fully involved as long as the experience is related to the academic program the student is enrolled.

The thing to keep in mind is that cannabis manufacturers are under strict rules by the state and must have regulations in place from hiring personnel to how the product is handled. In some instances, workers caught stealing are subject to criminal law. The same applies to alcohol production and firearms manufacturing.

If you have doubts, do consult with your school general counsel. Then make sure your procedure to engage with companies is outlined and your systems are reflective of the procedure. Students are going to find these opportunities on their own. So how do you handle the scenario when a student says, "... I have an internship at a cannabis growing facility and I want to count it for credit towards my degree requirements." You first have procedures to refer to first.

Hi,
Babson is in Massachusetts, where cannabis is legal, however, due to federal funding our legal counsel has said we should not work with cannabis companies. How are your schools dealing with this growing industry and Federal laws?
Thank you!
