Hi Donna. We have created the following definitions for evaluating the various types of experiential activities students may undertake. I am not readily aware of stated definitions intermingling internship and research. https://real.vcu.edu/for-facultystaff/types-of-real-activities/

Hi Meghan,
I hope we get some good feedback that can benefit both of us and happy to share with you anything else I learn along the way in my research!

Hi, Donna. I don't have any immediate resources in support of answering this question, but as my team and I are in the process of developing a resource guide which covers both, I'll be following this discussion with interest!

Hi Donna, CEWIL has a few slices of this question that might help you ground your responses. https://cewilcanada.ca/common/Uploaded%20files/Public%20Resources/French%20Documents/CEWIL_Definition%20revisee%20AIT%20et%20type%20AIT_Bilingual_VF.pdf

There are some useful rubrics for research criteria, depending on the academic context, in this lit review article too: https://www.lifescied.org/doi/full/10.1187/cbe.22-04-0069

I think you're also asking for resources that blend these ideas. I'm not familiar enough with the literature to know for sure if there are or are not any.

Best, Bill

Dear colleagues, I am wondering if anyone has any resources, definitions, best practices or other data to distinguish the difference between on-campus credit bearing internships versus on-campus research experiences? They are both valid experiential learning opportunities with some cross-over professional development and transferable skills, but also would appear to have some distinctions. I have some faculty who are intermingling the experiences in regards to what can be considered an (on campus) credit bearing internship versus a summer research assistant experience and am trying to compile some research and information to explain the difference and criteria for each according to best practices in experiential learning. Any information or leads to articles or other resources or just general info on how you distinguish on your campus is greatly appreciated. Many thanks!
